This question is posed by photographic artist JeongMee YOON (b. 1969, Seoul) in her work *The Pink and Blue Project*, for which she began photographing Korean and American girls and boys in their bedrooms in 2005. These gender-specific color schemes quickly revealed themselves to be a pervasive phenomenon, independent of cultural or ethnic background. YOON’s striking portraits—for which she spent hours meticulously arranging the pink or blue objects—challenge these color codes as well as the consumer habits of both children and parents. They expose the connections between gender and social norms, consumer culture, and the media.

For the continuation of the project, she revisited the children years later, documenting through photography how their favorite colors had changed.
