The story begins in California, where Dorothy is visiting her cousin Zeb. While riding in a horse-drawn buggy driven by the old horse Jim, a massive earthquake rips open the ground, swallowing Dorothy, her kitten Eureka, Zeb, and Jim.
They fall deep into the center of the Earth, where they unexpectedly reunite with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Oscar Diggs), whose hot-air balloon was also swallowed by the crack in the earth. Together, they must navigate a series of bizarre, dangerous underground worlds to find a way back up
