Charles Wesley was a man on fire for the Lord.

Once Christ had fully got hold of him, once he had laid everything on the altar, Wesley became a shining instrument for accomplishing God's purposes. Here is the heart-warming story of a man completely and utterly dedicated to the Lord's service.

In A Heart Set Free we come to know the man almost as if he were at our side telling his story himself: we experience his struggle to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ; we see his deep love for the souls of men and women in his care; we see him boldly rebuking in the name of the Lord the scoffers and troublemakers who often came only to disrupt his services; and we hear his gentle words of comfort and reassurance spoken at the funeral of a saintly woman.

We come to see as well how his great poetic gift came into full flower as his heart overflowed with praise to God in song. From his pen came 3000 songs, some among the most beautiful of the church: "Love Divine";

"Rejoice, the Lord Is King"; "Jesus, Lover of My Soul", "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing"; "And Can It Be That I Should Gain." Yet Charles Wesley nowhere comes across as a cardboard saint. Thus we see his besetting imperfections as well as his wonderful gifts-his impetuousness, his meddling in his brother's romance with Grace Murray, and his lifelong financial difficulties. Nor was his life without sorrow: his dear wife Sally was smitten with smallpox; he never had the joy of seeing his children enter into the new birth; his sister Hetty died young with a broken heart; and at the end of his life he had a bitter dispute with his brother John over ordaining men in the Methodist ministry.
