Tsutsugaki boasts a long history in both cities and the countryside. The present volume brings to light the little-known country tsutsugaki tradi-tion, distinctive for its ceremonial textiles. In village communities the rites of marriage, the birth of a child, the coming of the New Year or a bountiful catch at sea were great events in the lives of the people and hence demanded special fabrics with bold designs, auspicious motifs, and the finest workmanship. Bridal bed covers decorated with the felicitous crane and tortoise, chest covers and special wrapping cloths of deep indigo bearing family crests in white, baby towels with a patch of red to ward off sickness, brightly colored Boy's Day banners heralding a male child—all vividly express the special pride and joy of country folk at times of celebration.
These celebratory country textiles are stunningly reproduced in 48 plates, 16 in full color.
The commentaries on the plates detail the history, particular function, design, materials, and method of execution for each piece.
