A historical novel set during the Allied intervention in Siberia during the Russian Civil War (1918–1920)—a little-known episode in which American troops were sent to eastern Russia following the Bolshevik Revolution.

The story centers on Captain “Hunkpapa” Jack Carlisle, a U.S. Army officer of Sioux ancestry, and Lieutenant Ira Leverett, his second-in-command. Their unit is assigned to guard and maintain neutrality along a remote section of the Trans-Siberian Railway, an area contested by Bolshevik forces, White Russian armies, Cossack bands, and troops from several foreign nations.

As the American mission in Siberia begins to collapse in 1920, Leverett deserts the unit to search for Maryenka Austin, the Russian widow of an American soldier. Meanwhile, Captain Carlisle and his men attempt a dangerous retreat east toward Vladivostok, traveling by rail while pursued by an armored train commanded by a rogue White Russian officer who has stolen the Czarist gold reserves.

Blending fictional characters with real historical events, the novel explores themes of duty, loyalty, cultural identity, and the moral uncertainty of foreign intervention, while depicting the harsh conditions and political chaos of Siberia during the civil war.
