ISBN:

Robert Goffin's history of jazz, from its beginnings in Africa to concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan. As the back cover puts it, he asks how jazz relates to swing, ballads and classical music, where it came from, who founded it and where it is going, and he writes about the early bands and jazz in Europe.

According to the back cover, Goffin knew many of the jazz pioneers personally; he had been a criminal lawyer in Brussels until the Nazi invasion of Belgium and owned a library of over 3,000 records. Chapters include Tom-Tom in New Orleans, Birth of Jazz, Jazz in Europe, Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Satchmo and the Duke and The Future of Jazz.

Armed Services Edition No. 920, published by Editions for the Armed Services, Inc. by arrangement with Doubleday, Doran and Co. Translated by Walter Schaap and Leonard G. Feather. Copyright 1943, 1944.
