"Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, one of the great explorers of all time, was the first man to sail, in 1878-79, through the long-searched-for Northeast passage from Europe to the-Orient. This, the first biography of Nordenskiöld written in English, traces the career of a scholar-scientist-explorer, his flight from his Russian dominated homeland Finland, his arctic explorations, his role as initiator of the scientific study of early maps; all set against a background of Swedish and West-European society of the second half of the 19th century. About the author: George Kish is Professor of Geography at the University of Michigan, and the author of numerous books and monographs, both popular and scientific, published in Europe and North America. For many years he has been specializing in the history of geography, map-making, and explorations. His biography of Nordenskiöld is based entirely on original sources from Scandinavia."
