When Special Forces Sergeant George E. Smith went to Vietnam in early 1963, he thought it was to save the "democratic" Diem regime from the Chinese Communists. Set down in a sugar plantation owned by Diem's sister-in-law, Madame Nhu, he grew frustrated and cynical. Then guerrilla regulars overran his camp in a perfectly executed night attack. He was a prisoner of the Vietcong.

Smith spent two years as a POW, moving from camp to camp in the middle of the jungle. Impressed from the beginning by Vietcong military pro-ficiency, he slowly overcame his
Green Beret "arrogance" and learned to see the VC as people-warm, just, humane, sincere, and so highly motivated that they seemed a different culture from the troops he was sent to train.

In 1965 he was released in a gesture honoring Norman Morrison, the
Quaker pacifist who immolated himself on the steps of the Pentagon. George Smith's story echoes what opponents of the war have said for some time-that we are not fighting on the side of the people in Vietnam.

George Smith testified at the Winter Soldier Investigation in Detroit and has spoken for the Vietnam Veterans Against the War. He is a rural mail carrier in West Virginia, where he is president of his union local and secretary of the state association. He lives across the river in East Liverpool, Ohio, with his wife and three children.
