"Taken From Memory" by American photographer Sheron Rupp (born 1943 in Mansfield, Ohio) is the result of a 25-year-long project. In search of her biographical roots, Rupp photographed rural America to rediscover a lost sense of belonging. However, the images are not a personal manifesto; rather, they offer a unique insight into life in the rural regions and small towns of America, situated between the metropolises of the East and West Coasts. Without arrogance or irony, without idealization or condemnation, Rupp's images from the past illuminate American society today. Rupp's award-winning work has been widely published and exhibited and is part of the collections of institutions such as the MoMA in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
