The Schaum Sight Reading Books are designed to provide interesting material to further the pupil's skill in reading. Finger numbers have been omitted so that the student may concentrate on NOTE READING without any other distraction.
Book I can be used as early as the Pre A Grade level. Book II is Grade I
or "A" Book degree of difficulty.
After reading dozens of articles on sight reading and consulting all the available published literature on the subject—two main plans emerge to produce skill in sight reading:
1. Read a lot of simple music.
2. Learn to look ahead.
Always, while playing one note, look at the next one.
Much has been written on sight reading. Efforts have been made to compare the reading and playing of piano music with the reading of sentences in a book. It is not a fair comparison because in reading a book the eye spans one line at a time. In piano music the eye must see two lines (staffs) at once, and also, now and then, glance at the keys. In addition, the fingers have to acquire a technic to produce tones, whereas in reading a book very little physical lip technic is needed to produce the words. In other words reading from a book is a distinctly different process than sight reading piano music.
