A volume presenting English translations of two classic works of medieval Japanese literature: “Hōjōki” (The Ten Foot Square Hut) by Kamo no Chōmei and selections from “The Tale of the Heike”, the famous Japanese war epic recounting the struggle between the Taira (Heike) and Minamoto clans in the late 12th century.
The Ten Foot Square Hut is a reflective essay written in 1212 in which the Buddhist poet Kamo no Chōmei describes his withdrawal from society to live in a small hut in the mountains. The work meditates on impermanence, natural disasters, and the transient nature of human life.
The Tale of the Heike is one of Japan’s most important historical epics, traditionally recited by blind lute priests. It narrates the rise and fall of the Taira clan during the Genpei War (1180–1185) and explores themes of heroism, tragedy, and the Buddhist concept of impermanence.
Sadler’s translation brings these influential texts to English readers, providing access to two works that have played a significant role in shaping Japan’s literary and historical tradition.
