The story begins with William Monk, a private "agent of enquiry," being hired by Lucius Stourbridge to find his missing fiancée, Miriam Gardiner. Miriam abruptly vanished from a croquet party at a luxurious Bayswater mansion, leaving behind her social standing and prospective marriage.
Monk's investigation takes a dark turn when he finds the coach Miriam used to flee; nearby lies the murdered body of the family coachman. Miriam soon becomes the primary suspect and is arrested for the murder. As she refuses to defend herself or explain her flight, Monk and his newlywed wife, nurse Hester Latterly, must race to uncover a secret Miriam is seemingly willing to die for. A subplot involves Hester's own investigation into stolen hospital supplies, which eventually intersects with the main case.
