Set in 6th-century Scandinavia, Beowulf is a foundational Old English epic poem that chronicles the legendary life and heroic deeds of a mighty Geatish warrior. The narrative is divided into three monumental encounters against terrifying supernatural threats.
The story opens with Beowulf sailing to Denmark to rescue Heorot, the great mead-hall of King Hrothgar, which has been under brutal nighttime siege by a grotesque, man-eating monster named Grendel. In a ferocious display of raw strength, Beowulf battles Grendel unarmed and tears the creature’s arm from its socket. When Grendel's vengeful mother emerges from her murky swampland lair to seek retribution, Beowulf tracks her to an underwater cavern and slays her with an ancient giant's sword.
The timeline then leaps forward fifty years. Beowulf, now the wise and revered King of the Geats, faces a final crisis when a slave accidentally awakens a fierce, hoard-guarding dragon. Though advanced in age, the noble king ventures out to protect his kingdom. With the loyal help of his young kinsman Wiglaf, Beowulf kills the beast but is fatally wounded by its venomous fangs, ending the classic poem with a solemn elegy on heroism, mortality, and the ultimate collapse of his civilization.
