This edition features a renowned translation by Charles W. Kennedy, who rendered the text into traditional alliterative verse to replicate the poetic meter and rhythm used by original Anglo-Saxon bards.

Set in pagan Scandinavia during the 6th century, Beowulf is the oldest surviving epic poem in the Old English language. The narrative follows a legendary Geatish warrior who sails to Denmark to save Heorot, the great mead-hall of King Hrothgar, which has been plagued by a monstrous creature named Grendel. Relying on raw physical strength, the hero defeats Grendel in a brutal hand-to-hand fight and later tracks Grendel's vengeful mother to an underwater cave to slay her as well. Years later, having returned home to rule his own people for decades, the aging king faces a final crisis when a fierce dragon begins destroying his kingdom. Alongside his loyal young kinsman Wiglaf, he confronts the beast, killing it but sustaining a fatal, venomous wound that brings a tragic end to his historic reign.
