A study of the governorship of Spanish Florida from 1700 to 1763, treating the office as a frontier institution and examining the administrative, judicial, economic, military, social and religious problems the governor faced. The jacket notes that Florida's governors were usually chosen for military ability yet had to handle financial, religious, judicial and administrative problems, often governing by intuition rather than imperial practice, even though the colony was theoretically under superiors in Cuba. TePaske's approach is topical rather than chronological, drawing largely on unpublished manuscript sources in Seville and London. Chapters cover checks on the governor such as the residencia, justice, economic problems, defense, the Church and Indian policy, with appendices listing governors of Florida and Cuba and viceroys of New Spain.
