Part I of Frank Steeley's Nature Drawing and Design, one of Bacon's Excelsior Drawing Publications, by the Art Master and Inspecting Teacher of Drawing at the Birmingham Municipal School of Art. As the preface explains, it gives the student typical drawings of natural flowers and plants drawn direct from nature, then shows how these forms can be conventionalised and adapted to fill spaces and make patterns and designs. This part contains twenty-four plates, twelve of nature and twelve of designs, covering the snowdrop, daisy, tulip, laurel, periwinkle, crocus, clematis, ivy, buttercup, oleander, narcissus and Virginian creeper, each with a descriptive text. It also sets out the Board of Education examination requirements in freehand drawing, blackboard drawing and memory drawing of plant form, with advice on how to use the books.
