In The Courage to Be, theologian and philosopher Paul Tillich examines the fundamental human struggle against anxiety and despair. Tillich identifies three primary forms of anxiety that have dominated western history: the anxiety of fate and death, the anxiety of guilt and condemnation, and the modern anxiety of emptiness and meaninglessness. To confront these forces, he analyzes various forms of courage—the "courage to be as a part" (conforming to a group or society) and the "courage to be as oneself" (individualism and self-affirmation). Ultimately, Tillich argues that both forms are incomplete on their own and points toward a higher "courage to accept acceptance"—an absolute faith rooted in the "God above God" that enables individuals to transcend despair and affirm life in the face of non-being.
