The English commentary by map historians Günther Schilder and Jan van Bracht to Edition Seefeld's 1988 facsimile of two seventeenth-century images of New Amsterdam: the plan 'Nieuw Amsterdam ofte nue Nieuw Iorx opt' Eylant Man' (the 'Castello' plan in the Biblioteca Laurenziana, Florence) and the view 'Afbeeldinge van de stadt Amsterdam in Nieuw Nederlandt' (in the State Archives, The Hague). Its chapters cover the Dutch on the American east coast (1609-1650), new light on the mapping of New Netherland, the origin of the Vingboons collection and Joan Blaeu, the draughtsman Johannes Vingboons, the view and the Castello plan, and the traces of the Dutch past. Illustrated with early maps and views of New Netherland and New Amsterdam.
