Book Notes: Title page torn at the fore-edge with loss of paper, touching the margin of the facing page; margin of the preface page chipped. Leather spine worn and chipped with loss; spine label rubbed. Marbled boards heavily rubbed and scuffed; corners worn. Pages toned with foxing and spotting; dampstain at the lower edge of the front pastedown. Printed company library label on the front pastedown: "Property of Company 'B,' 2d Battalion, 12th U.S. Infantry. No. 196 [number in ink]. For the sole use of the Company." The label is partly covered by a later bookplate tipped in along its top edge. Pictorial "Ex Libris F. Walker" bookplate over the company label, with a pencil name and place above it. Pencil name at the head of the title page, reading approximately "Edgar F. Bl[?], Co. B 21st".

Civil War-era U.S. Army company library copy. The front pastedown carries the printed label "Property of Company 'B,' 2d Battalion, 12th U.S. Infantry. No. 196. For the sole use of the Company." The 2d Battalion, 12th U.S. Infantry was created in 1861, served with the Army of the Potomac, and was redesignated the 21st U.S. Infantry in 1866. A pencil name at the head of the title page reads approximately "Edgar F. Bl[?], Co. B 21st."
