John Malcolm Brinnin's biography of Gertrude Stein, which also looks at the relationship between her writing and cubism in painting. Following the jacket, it traces her years as a Radcliffe undergraduate under William James, her medical training at Johns Hopkins, and her move to Paris with her brother Leo, where at 27 rue de Fleurus they collected work by Derain, Gris, Braque, Matisse and Picasso.

Later chapters cover the arrival of Alice B. Toklas, the years after the First World War when young writers such as Ernest Hemingway, Sherwood Anderson and F. Scott Fitzgerald visited her, the success of The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and the opera Four Saints in Three Acts with Virgil Thomson, her lecture tour of America, the Nazi occupation spent in the village of Bilignin, and her return to Paris until her death in 1946.
